Ramadan Abstinence: Spiritual Fuel for 11 Months

blog

Abstaining Ramadan is a spiritual fuel for 11 months. Ramadan is the most energetically charged month of the year, making it an extraordinary opportunity to recharge your body and self with pure divine energy. But what is true abstention, and how can you experience it to receive the full blessings of this sacred time?

What Is True Abstention (Siyam)?

I invite you to reflect for a moment on this idea:
Is Abstention (Siyam) an action or the absence of action? In other words, does abstention (ṣiyām) mean simply to refrain from food, drink, and intimacy?
Or are these forms of refraining merely tools that allow you to access true ṣawm (fasting) in its purest form?

Withholding food and drink is known as withholding (imsāk), and it serves as a gateway to genuine fasting (ṣawm). By halting earthly nourishment, withholding (imsāk) creates space within you to receive elevated, pure nourishment directly from the divine Source.

Nourishment of the Self vs. Nourishment of the Body

The nourishment of the self comes from higher values, while desires drive the nourishment of the body. To live in flow and receive abundance and blessings from every direction, you must learn to balance both types of nourishment.

When this balance is disrupted, and a person becomes absorbed solely in feeding the body through desires life begins to resist. Negative events become easier to attract,

while the positive outcomes you long for become harder to reach.

This is why abstention (ṣiyām) during Ramadan, when practiced consciously, is an extraordinary opportunity to realign that balance.

By withholding (imsāk) from earthly nourishment, you create room for higher, divine nourishment to flow in and through this, you open the path toward true fasting (ṣawm),

where the self begins to feed on meaning, alignment, and connection with Allah.

Ramadan Abstinence:

True abstention (ṣiyām) during Ramadan is built upon three core principles:

  1. A heightened connection with Allah.

  2. Glorifying Allah above everything in the universe, including all other sources and means.

  3. Receiving celestial nourishment from the primary Source of all universal energy. And because this nourishment is elevated and heavenly, no earthly nourishment should be introduced during a specific period of the day.

Ramadan: A Declaration of Divine Nourishment

It’s a month in which you declare with your awareness and your entire being
that Allah is the Most Great, even above food itself.
You don’t just say it with words, but live it in action.

Do you believe that food is your only source of nourishment?

This month is a declaration that there is a greater Source than food and drink: Allah, the Most Great, exalted beyond every physical source of nourishment.

Do you believe that the emotions you receive from your partner are your only source of love and reassurance?
This month reminds you that there is a greater Source than any person: Allah, the Most Great, exalted beyond every emotional source.

It is the month of:
"That you may magnify Allah for having guided you." (Al-Baqarah:185)

When you stop all earthly sources of nourishment, you create more space within you
space to be filled with pure, elevated energy, and to experience its powerful effect.

So… is that what you’re truly doing?

What to Do When You Feel Hungry While Abstaining?

Feeling hungry or thirsty during Ramadan is not a weakness; it’s a signal. Your energy needs refueling, but not through food.

It’s a chance to recharge with pure, celestial energy from Allah instead.

Try This Simple Exercise:

  1. Close your eyes and take several deep breaths.

  2. Feel your connection to Allah in the present moment.

  3. Visualize divine energy flowing into your body.

  4. Say with deep presence: “And glorify your Allah.”
Know that He is greater than food, drink, and any source of emotions.

  5. Stay in this experience for a few minutes, then say: “And Allah is the Most High, the Most Great.”

Note: Results grow over time. Start practicing before Ramadan to experience stronger effects during the sacred month.

The Difference Between Abstinence (Seyam) and Fasting (Sawm)

Many think these terms are the same, but the Qur’an distinguishes between them:

  • Seyam (abstinence): The act of disconnecting from earthly sources (food, drink, intimacy) to recharge spiritually from the ultimate source of energy.

  • Sawm (fasting): A state of silence and deep divine connection, in which the heart receives inspiration while the tongue abstains from human speech. The longer this continues, especially for three nights, the stronger the revelations.

Fasting for the Most Merciful and Its Profound Effects

Fasting for the Most Merciful (ṣawm li-Rahman) is one of the most profound spiritual states you can enter during Abstaining Ramadan.

This elevated form of true fasting disconnects you from the world, no conversations, no distractions, just presence, silence, and divine alignment.

When this state is combined with the sacred abstinence (ṣiyām) of Ramadan, the energetic impact becomes even more pronounced. You begin to operate on a high spiritual frequency, receiving pure, celestial nourishment that transforms you from the inside out.

This isn’t symbolic, it’s energetic. And the results can seem miraculous.

Examples from the Qur’an of Sacred Fasting States

The Qur’an highlights individuals who entered this divine state and witnessed extraordinary events:

  • Maryam (Mary) received Jesus without ever being touched by a man.

  • Ibrahim (Abraham) watched the dead come back to life.

  • Musa (Moses) received divine revelation on the tablets.

  • Zakariya (Zechariah) was gifted a child in old age after a long period of silence.

Each miracle was born in an atmosphere of stillness, silence, and divine reliance, a result of fasting for Al-Rahman, not just physically, but spiritually.
